Pinch pot sake cups making workshop at KANPAI

  • KANPAI Sake Brewery & Taproom 48 Druid Street London, England, SE1 2EZ United Kingdom (map)

Join us for a fun-filled day at Kanpai London Sake Brewery & Taproom! Learn the art of making two pinch pot sake cups with expert guidance from Noriko Nagaoka whilst enjoying a can of Sparkling Session Sake or soft drink. Get your hands dirty, unleash your creativity, and sip on some delicious sake with us.

All the way from Osaka in Japan, to London's leafy North Finchley, Noriko creates unique hand-crafted stoneware pieces. Taking inspiration from one of the 20th century's most celebrated potters, fellow countryman Shoji Hamada, she works with the flow of the glaze and uses gravity combined with the shapes of her ceramics. Spontaneity is vital in capturing the fluid designs that occur in the glazing process, making each single piece individual, always a one-off. Her expanding range of ceramics range from small delicate sake cups, to sets of plates and bowls, all the way to larger vases and pots – all coloured and textured by the layered glazing effect that echoes the natural environment of land and sea in her native Japan.

You will make sake cups (a set of two) or a cup or small pot/bowl, having a smooth finish or decorated with leaves and stamps of your choice.

A pinch pot is a basic style of pottery produced by thinning the clay walls through a forefinger and thumb pinching process. This form of pottery has been made since antiquity up to the present. Pottery created using this technique can be both ornamental and functional.
